Telecoms association GSMA and Mexican carriers Altán Redes, América Móvil, AT&T Mexico, and Telefónica Mexico announced the launch of GSMA Open Gateway in the country.

Established in 2023, the global initiative enables mobile operators to open their networks to developers to drive innovation and collaboration across the digital ecosystem.

“The participation of all four Mexican operators in GSMA Open Gateway ensures the scale needed for the initiative to be commercially attractive and guarantees that all users in the country can benefit from new, more secure and reliable applications,” said Alejandro Adamowicz, Director of Technology and Strategy for Latin America at GSMA.

The Open Gateway uses unique access points, known as Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), which serve as gateways to information about network capabilities.

They are available through the CAMARA repository, an open-source project by GSMA and the Linux Foundation, which developers can access to integrate them directly into their applications.

The three APIs presented in Mexico are:

  • SIM SWAP, which allows the verification of SIM card replacements on a mobile line;
  • Device Location, which provides information about the location of a device;
  • Number Verification, which checks if a phone number is associated with a specific device.

In a press release, the GSMA said these APIs will help, for example, detect and prevent fraud in payments and financial transactions.

“[The initiative] will be key to simplifying the development of applications and services within the digital ecosystem, offering a competitive edge in terms of security for banks, fintechs, and, more broadly, for all users across the telecommunications industry in the country,” added Boris Velandia, Vice President and General Director of the Wholesale Business at AT&T Mexico.

According to GSMA, over 73 mobile operator groups, representing 284 mobile networks and almost 80% of mobile connections globally, have joined Open Gateway. In Latin America, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Peru have already introduced their first portfolio of APIs, with new markets set to join in 2025.
