Spanish operator Telefónica announced it has deployed 5G in over 90% of Spain. More specifically, the company has offered mobile internet in the 3.500 MHz band to 1,500 cities. The 5G service in the 700 MHz is in service in 3,585 cities.

Telefónica started deploying 5G in September 2020 in the country. According to the company, which turned 100 years old in 2024, coverage in all bands grew from 78% in 2020 to 90% in four years.

“In addition to the [5G] deployment, Telefónica has also increased both enterprise and private services that rely on this technology and allow to apply specific functionalities of 5G, such as network slicing and edge computing,” the operator said in a press statement.

Telefónica started offering its network slicing service in October 2024 through Movistar in Spain. The company foresees use cases like connected vehicle management and remote work benefitting the most from slicing.

“We’re immersed in a stage where there is an ongoing mobilisation of connected consumers and employees, which demands access to networks and continuously protecting massive data,” said Adrián García Nevado, director of Enterprise at Telefónica Spain.

“All of this increases the demand for private mobile networks with new alternatives that were not possible until now,” he concluded.
