We hear from a panel of experts transforming their non-telco businesses about the pain points they currently experience, what their plans are and where 5G and beyond might offer value… if we can structure the offerings in the right way.

 
 

Notoriously, only a minority of 3GPP specifications reach commercialisation while some promising ideas get squashed in the deliberation process. There are very few levers to steer the direction of 3GPP and its members.  What changes would make 3GPP more user-friendly, more productive or more responsive to demand… and is that desirable?

 
 

Time for a coffee and discussions with your fellow attendees. 

 

This is one of the tropes that people come out with, alongside ‘the even numbers deliver what the odd numbers promise.’ What actual outcomes are people looking for? Is this magical thinking? Or is it a sign that we should re-focus on outstanding problems?

This keynote interview opens a day of discussion focussing on growth in the telecoms industry. CEOs today are under pressure to grow their businesses and if necessary take risks in order to do so. However, network technology sales processes have tended to emphasise efficiency and lower costs per bit, reflecting the demands placed by CTOs and CFOs. So, assuming we can offer growth opportunities through 6G’s development, are the telcos in a position to take them?

For cellular systems the RAN typically gets a huge amount of attention. However, the ITU describes 6G as not solely cellular but integrating multiple access methods. If that’s so – and in this debate we question that – can we gain the most value from inventions in the core, transport or aggregation networks, the software or even the end devices, and what would that look like?

 

A chance to carry on the day’s debates and swap ideas with other attendees over refreshments, or browse the demonstrrations provided.

 

Depending on how people think of it, “6G” can be seen as implying a huge and horrible new round of infrastructure costs and spectrum auctions. That need not be the case, though.

This discussion focuses on the scope for value creation offered by models based on maximising coverage; AI-RAN; dynamic spectrum sharing or other innovations and how they can complement each other.

While sensing and communications (JCAS or ICAS) have gained a great deal of attention in 6G discussions, few technologies make a major impact in isolation. This discussion explores how a new telecoms capability could be used as a part of new service creation beyond solely the telecoms ecosystem.

Telecoms providers are finding ways to evolve their service capabilities past the limits of their physical infrastructure. Including case studies, we explore what this should mean for the R&D community as the nature of what a “telecoms service provider” fundamentally changes.

AI in the network has been extensively discussed for delivering current services more effectively, efficiently or reliably. But how do we use AI as a catalyst for growth?

This conversation highlights the opportunities AI can bring to deliver uniquely telecoms-style AI capabilities in, for example, distributed or on-device contexts.
