Nokia announced that it has reached 7,000 patent families declared essential to 5G, each comprising several individual patents.
According to the company, this milestone adds to the “active pre-standardization work” that the Finnish vendor has been putting in to position the brand as an early leader in 6G standardisation.
In 2023, Nokia unveiled its new logo during MWC Barcelona and revealed its plans to shift course towards future technologies such as 6G.
Among the patents, Nokia’s inventions include innovations in 5G radio protocol design, 5G security and interface technologies that define how smartphones, connected cars and other connected devices interact with 5G networks.
Overall, since 2000, the company has invested more than €150 billion in R&D and standardisation. Over 250 companies have secured a license to Nokia’s patented technologies under fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms. Among others, these terms allow for cheaper costs, for example.
“Nokia’s substantial investment in cellular R&D and standardisation continues to pay off,” said Patrik Hammarén, Acting President of Nokia Technologies. “Thanks to all the Nokia inventors and our patenting professionals for their hard work and problem-solving.”
